This project, due to go on site in 2010, is a wide ranging public realm project in Elephant & Castle, South East London. The 3 hectare site encompasses the Pullens Estate; a conservation area characterised by its purpose built housing for craftspeople - an original Victorian example of live/work space.
Dallas Pierce Quintero won the commission in an open competition organised by the London Borough of Southwark in 2008. Local residents had suggested an open design competition to find a designer to work with the community to improve the public realm in their area. First Base, who are building the ‘Printworks’ development on part of the site agreed to this innovative approach and have contributed funding from their Section 106 contributions.
“We were excited by its ability to both enhance the visual aspect of the public realm but also to unite the community by encouraging residents to come together and grow their own produce.”
Elliot Lipton, Managing Director of First Base
DPQ was selected by a panel of judges, along with voting from the community, for the proposal ‘Abundant Amelia’, which was designed to return a sense of ownership to the public realm for all users.
