Completed in 2010, Our Place occupies the ground floor of an Edwardian house and was originally a series of small rooms with entry to the garden via a door on to an alley with no visual connection between the interior and exterior. For us the most important enhancement of this house was creating a balance between these elements.
DPQ produced a scheme which centralised a stand-alone w/c and wet room and then opened up to the main living space looking onto the garden. This forms a clear demarcation between the public and private space, allowing the main living space to be flexible in it's layout and maximise views to the exterior.
The equal proportions of the main living space and the garden means neither is dominant over the other. This overlapping relationship has enabled us to use exterior or interior space freely, but at the same time as delineated space if need be.
Feeling at home in this simple single story extension has been a process of making a space that does not have an assigned function. It is a place that provides intimacy and yet can adapt to everyday domestic behaviour.
Key design features include symmetry and crisp lines as well as carefully selected material palates, which provide the neutral backdrop to reflect its surroundings and its users.
